How to Keep Your Braids Fresh for Longer

How to Keep Your Braids Fresh for Longer

Protective styles are an investment — in time, money, and your hair's health. But without the right aftercare, even the neatest install can look tired within a week. Here's exactly how to make your braids last longer and keep your edges intact while you're at it.

  • Moisturise your scalp daily. Braids can dry out your scalp fast. Use a lightweight oil or scalp spray — apply directly to the parting lines every 1–2 days to prevent flaking and itching.
  • Wrap your hair every night. A satin scarf or bonnet is non-negotiable. Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture and cause frizz. Satin keeps your braids smooth and your edges laid.
  • Wash carefully — not roughly. Dilute your shampoo in a bottle, apply to the scalp, and rinse gently. Avoid scrubbing or bunching the braids — this causes frizz and loosening at the root.
  • Don't leave them in too long. 6–8 weeks is the sweet spot for most styles. Longer than that and the shed hair tangling at the root can cause real damage when you take them out.
  • Protect your edges. Avoid styles that pull too tightly at the hairline. Use an edge control that holds without drying out the skin, and give your edges a break between installs.

Your protective style should be protecting your hair — not working against it. The right products make all the difference.
