With so many types, textures, and price points on the market, buying hair extensions can feel overwhelming. Whether it's your first time or you're switching things up, here's what you actually need to know before you spend a penny.
- Know your hair type and goal. Are you adding length, volume, or going for a full protective style? Your goal determines the method — clip-ins for flexibility, weaves for longevity, wigs for versatility.
- Human hair vs synthetic. Human hair is more expensive but can be heat-styled, last longer, and blend more naturally. Synthetic is great for defined protective styles where you won't be applying heat.
- Match the texture to your own. Extensions look most natural when the texture complements your own hair — especially at the leave-out or the perimeter. Don't fight your natural texture, work with it.
- Buy enough — and then some. Running out mid-install because a pack was shorter than expected is a real headache. Always buy one extra bundle or pack when in doubt.
- Check the quality before you commit. Quality hair should feel soft, have minimal shedding, and have a consistent texture from root to tip. If a deal looks too good, the hair will show it.
The right hair can transform your entire look — but only if it's the right match for you. Take your time, ask questions, and invest in quality you can trust.
